The Lifting Part
"Allow yourself to be a beginner. No one starts at the top."
A few months ago, I asked a friend if she'd recommend a trainer that was willing to work with a runner that didn't want to do non-runner things. I knew that in order to become a better runner I had to become the best possible athlete that I could be.
Fortunately, I asked someone that never turns down a challenge!
I spent the Summer working on learning movements and improving my overall conditioning and strength. When I had to take two months off from running for an injured foot, it felt like salvation to be able to continue working out in ways that I never would have been able to do if it weren't for my trainers.

Four weeks ago, I started a training cycle that is focused on strength and I spent a week setting maxes in various lifts.
This week, as a progression marker, I spent another week testing my maxes to see if and how I had improved.
I saw the following results -
Bench - 135 pounds, no change
Overhead - 100 pounds, +15 pounds
Back Squat - 185 pounds, +40 pounds
Clean - 130 pounds, +10 pounds
Deadlift - 240 pounds, +15 pounds
Thank you to Lisa, Doni, Ashley, and Jennifer for working with the runner that didn't want to do non-runner things. This progress is just as much a result of your coaching and mentoring as it is my own work.

Oops sorry. Wanted to edit my comment and instead deleted.... here we go:
ReplyDeleteNice gains sir. Very cool to see you lifting now as well as running. It sure do help as you say...
Little by little is so true. 改善! Gradual improvement. Can I go pedantic for a sec?.... I'm weird...
The Japanese pronounciation is Kaizen, and Japanese (and Korean) businesses used the concept to take an economy from ashes to dominance post WWII. American businesses then rushed in and tried to ape it.
Back in Korean class you and I would have pronounced it 개선하다.
You look to be mastering the application of it in your life, to tremendous results! Gradually of course. Though with you it's often so quickly! You are a beast and an inspiration to us all. Cheers to you Chip.
Thanks! I'm working on it (and me). Gradual improvement! I cleaned up the deleted comment from earlier.
